I love how in my criminology class today my professor was basically like “stop blaming the victim you shits.”
My favorite criminology professor once asked the class, “What should someone do to best prevent being assaulted?” Various answers were given, ranging from practical tips like “Don’t leave your drink unattended” to the blatantly predatory and misogynistic “Don’t wear (X).” She called on a handful of people to allow folks to be heard and build off each others answers. Then, after a severe pause, she said “You’re all wrong. Every single one of you. Why? Because the question was wrong, the ideas and myths that fuel it is wrong, the culture that encourages it is wrong. If this were a quiz, each of us would have failed today- We would have failed each other and ourselves by continuing to cater to questions that blame the victim instead of demanding answers to the problem that is rape culture itself. Every time we put the blame and responsibility on the victim, we fail, which is why those of you who want to know what they were wearing will fail my class as well.”
It was one of the most beautiful moments in academia I have ever experienced.
